Maisha Mazuri Children Centre is home to 39 Orphans and Vulnerable Children from across the County. The centre-based kids live in distinct wings with a common living hall where they can share meals as a family. A resident Matron and Patron are responsible for the day to day well being of the kids.
The services of a cook , social worker, health worker, a manager and a farm worker comes in handy in making the centre operational. Volunteers are also of great help to the daily routine in service of the kids.
The community Based aspect of the program has over 60 kids supported while at their village homes. Most of the community based kids are under the care of aged caregivers and or ailing guardians who themselves need support.
In total Maisha Mazuri Children Centre supports over 100 kids both centre based and Community based. The project is responsible for their support in Education, Health , clothing , rights protection, food and psycho social support.
With a growing number of students in Elementary school and High school from the supported Kids by Maisha Mazuri, it was only logical to establish the Primary and secondary schools.
Currently, the secondary school has 103 students in Forms 1, 2, 3 & 4. The focus is to have vocational skills-oriented secondary schools where learners can identify their career paths early in school and in line with the Government competency-based curriculum.
The Primary level of the school has 246 pupils currently. The school follows the new competency-based curriculum by the government and integrates elements of the Waldorf school concept in Kindergarten to make it more realistic for learners to grow competencies at an early age.
YSK works with local and international volunteers on various projects. Ten's of volunteers have been admitted in the past ranging from skilled, non-skilled, young, aged and or just based on their interest and passion to give back to society.
The highest number of volunteers to have worked with YSK were teacher trainees for both Primary and Secondary schools. Others were on agriculture, vocational skills and last but not least high leavers from Europe with general interest just to help and learn from our team of staff, kids and communities.
The YSK Internship placement office handles industrial and vocational attachments for our learners in the Secondary and Skills Centre. The office is the link between the project and outside business world making the absorption of graduates into companies and hence the successful transition from a class to the job market.
